The following is an excerpt from the forward of Matthew Henry's Commentary published by Hendrickson Publishers. It is entitled, The Life Of Matthew Henry, by J.B. Williams, p 72.
“At so vast a distance did he (Matthew Henry) stand from (or, he was so far from) selfishness, credulity (being easily swayed), and incaution (the trait of forgetting or ignoring possible danger), that every eye within his circle looked to him for direction and counsel...When advised with (or, when asked for counsel), his discourse was familiar (unceremonious; easy) and minute (concise); and, in addition to that sound instruction, to which his great sagacity (the quality of being discerning, sound in judgment, and farsighted {a thoughtful or prudent approach to planning for the future}) and long experience contributed, he commonly cited some appropriate portion of Scripture to bear upon the subject...(he would also say)...'Our great duty is to trust in God, to commit our way to him: and when our fears take us off from that (or, remove us) so that we cannot find in our hearts to let him dispose of us (correct us), they (the fears) are sinful. Prevailing fears are briars and thorns which choke many a good duty (or, the act of being afraid is a hindrance that keeps us from performing the works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them-ref Ephesians 2:10).'”
